California's Northern Coast: Retreat To The Hills

After a restless night in Eureka, and a fun day in the redwoods, it's time to find our new hotel.

Blue Lake Casino and Resort is in the tiny town of Blue Lake, 7 miles east of Arcata in the hills. We check in, easy enough, and go to our room. Flick on the light, check the bathroom and...bathtub.

This is a problem because I'd confirmed a roll-in shower. Usually, we can get by with a tub but Tim's nursing a knee injury and it's imperative that we get a roll-in shower because lifting him into the tub can easily aggravate it.

Back at the front desk, I explain and am told "we have no more roll-in showers available."

"But I have a confirmed reservation for one right here," as I show them the reservation on my phone.

Long story short, they offer to rebook me at a nearby hotel...back at the pit of darkness we just came from.  We suck it up and stay in the room but make sure I take every opportunity to tell them exactly how I feel every time I'm greeted with "hello, Mr. Musick...how are you enjoying your stay?"

Being an Indian reservation, they are not obligated to follow U.S. laws like the ADA so I really have no recourse except to leave and go home. We're too tired for that (the hotel apologized later and offered me 25% off my next stay).

Letty and I give it our all and are very careful giving Tim a bath in the tub (with a transfer bench) but it still takes us about two hours...when the maid comes calling to clean the room. We tell management to have the maid come back later.

On the plus side, the hotel restaurant has a fantastic breakfast. We get $9 each credit for that and fortify ourselves for the day ahead.

Let's hope things look up for that.
